Looking Beyond the Forge
For decades, the visual language of industrial manufacturing has looked remarkably similar. Fiery furnaces. Molten steel. Workers in hard hats. While those images accurately depict the process, they say very little about the impact that process makes possible.
For Ellwood, that distinction mattered. The company wasn't trying to attract customers looking for a steel supplier—it was building relationships with organizations solving some of the world's most demanding engineering challenges.
So rather than centering the identity on the forge itself, we shifted the focus to the missions Ellwood helps enable. A cooler color palette, outcome-oriented imagery and a visual system rooted in precision all worked together to express the company's unique combination of mastery integrity.
The thrust of the visual system is the “arc flare” — a dynamic visual motif capturing the intensity of transforming scrap steel into molten metal. This element draws from a defining element in Ellwood’s process: the arc furnace.
The result is an identity that feels every bit as sophisticated as the work—and the customers—it was built to serve.
